Witnessing HERstory: Spotlight on Epic & Inspiring Women’s College Basketball
I was fortunate to be at the most amazing NCAA women's college basketball game ever. This wasn't just a college basketball game it was a culmination of years of little girls, high school girls, and women with a dream to play on a big stage and get the recognition and be in the spotlight that the boys and men have always been in. And it did not disappoint.
I will never be able to accurately describe the energy and electricity inside MVP Arena in Albany but I will tell you that looking at all of the fans in the building, no matter who they were rooting for, were there to witness HERstory.
Being a former athlete, the little girl inside of me longed for this type of validation and recognition. When we played, no matter the sport, our validation was our family and friends and at the time it was enough because it's all we knew. Now, though, it's at a whole different level.
I am so grateful for my experiences as a female athlete and a fan but energized and invigorated for the present and the future for all women athletes.
Last night reminded me of Brandi Chastain and her celebration when she scored the winning goal for the US Women's soccer team. That moment elevated women's soccer and inspired so many.
This was that moment for women's basketball and how cool it happened in our backyard. Whomever you root for, know that you are rooting for all of the female athletes who longed for this validation, and continue to cheer on and inspire the future.
