When Tim McGraw released his self-titled debut album in 1993, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was nine years old, and the social media platform was still 11 years away from existence. Since then, technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, and fans are now able to get up close and personal with their favorite artists, thanks in part to Facebook, Twitter and a number of other outlets. But that's a challenging concept for McGraw.

“I can be honest — I hate social media," McGraw said at a recent media event. "I understand it, and it’s certainly a big part of our business and what we do. I’m coming along. When it’s fun and it’s interesting and I really think I have something to say, then I say something. But for the most part, I don’t want to do it every day. I don’t want to get involved in it every day. I don’t think it means as much if you do."

Still, the country star has more than 7.5 million Facebook fans, nearly 2.25 million Twitter followers, and 795,000 people following him on Instagram. Clearly, his fans like his presence on social media, even if he doesn't.

"I’m old school ... I'm an analog guy in a digital world," McGraw acknowledges. "I don’t quite get it. But I understand it. I understand how important it is, and I understand that I need to do more of it."

While McGraw is himself posting more and more on his profiles, rather than relying on his team, he acknowledges that he will never embrace social media as much as some of his peers.

"I don’t know if I’m ever gonna be a social media animal," he says. "I don’t know that that’s ever gonna happen..”
