It's Speed Week in New York State. The first full week in June is all about cracking down not just on speeding, but work zone violators, and following the important. "Move Over Law".

From June 3rd through June 9th, troopers will be out in full force, using both marked and unmarked cars to catch offenders. The State Police superintendent said troopers will be very visible during this time and throughout the busy summer driving season.

Data from UAlbany’s Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research shows that nearly twelve thousand New Yorkers were hurt in speed-related crashes last year, and three hundred forty-five people died. During last year’s Speed Week, state troopers handed out nearly twenty-one thousand tickets. Out of those, nearly eleven thousand were for speeding, three hundred seventy-five for breaking the "Move Over Law," and one hundred seventy-two for drunk and impaired driving.

The "Move Over Law" was updated earlier this year to cover all vehicles stopped on the side of the road, not just emergency responders.

If you get caught speeding for the first time, you could be fined anywhere from forty-five dollars for going ten miles per hour over the limit to six hundred dollars for going more than thirty mph over the limit.
