New York/Canada Border to Open-One Way
For Americans that have been fully vaccinated for at least 14 days, you will once again be allowed to cross the Canadian border as of Monday August 9th.
With vaccination rates continuing to increase every day in both the U.S. and Canada and infection rates remaining low, we are pleased that the Canadian government is finally reopening its borders to fully vaccinated individuals beginning August 9. An open border with our neighbors to the North means families will be reunited once again and much-needed relief for our border communities that depend on cross-border trade and supply chains." - Governor Andrew Cuomo
According to NPR, Canada is opening the border to Americans first, followed by fully vaccinated individuals from around the world on Tuesday September 7th. Vaccinated or not you will still need proof of vaccination and a negative pre-arrival coronavirus test result but won't have to quarantine when you get to Canada.
Ironically, as the Canadian border opens to fully vaccinated Americans, the United States border remains closed to Canadians. USA Today reports that the United States has extended border restrictions on nonessential travel through August 21, 2021.
We are continuing to review our travel restrictions. Any decisions about reopening travel will be guided by our public health and medical experts. We take this incredibly seriously. We look and are guided by our own medical experts. I wouldn’t look at it through a reciprocal intention. - White House press secretary Jen Psaki
