Five Stores That Have Closed Around The Capital Region in 2026

Things have been rough for many in the retail and restaurant world in the early part of 2026. It feels like we're learning of more closures each day around the Capital Region, and unfortunately it's likely not over.

We have had to say goodbye to many of our favorites and local spots. That would include the Applebees in Glenville, and a Stewart's in Mechanicville. 2026 is also seeing the closure of over 350 Wendy's locations, though we don't know how many of those might be around New York.

You have to ask yourself when will we stop losing places that we love?

There have been a few places that announced sudden closures and others that closed up gradually. We lost them all the same, and some of them are still doing sales as the officially close the doors for good.

1. Francesca's

Francesca's announced in January that all of their stores would be closing, and it came out of nowhere. This staple of several malls around Upstate New York liquidated all of their merchandise after making the shocking announcement.

2. Silver Parrot

This Stuyvesant Plaza spot was located there for over 40 years but would be closing up as of February 28, 2026. Customers are encouraged to stop in and redeem any gift cards before the final day of February.

3. Gershon's

The closing of this beloved deli in Schenectady was a total shock to not only customers but also employees. They made the announcement that Friday January 30th had been their final day of operation and would not open again for business.

4. Game Stop

It feels like the days of going tot he store to buy video games is in the past with digital downloads. Game Stop announced more closures across New York in 2026 after closing many locations in 2025.

5. Eddie Bauer

The Eddie Bauer brand is planning to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and close all of their brick-and-mortar locations in North America. In January of 2023, Eddie Bauer closed it's store located in Saratoga Springs, NY. Now it appears the store in Colonie and Lake George are next.
