This awesome event is part of the Free Fishing Days program, which started back in 1991. The idea is to give everyone a taste of fishing without any cost, hopefully sparking a new hobby and encouraging everyone to support conservation efforts by purchasing a fishing license down the road.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has teamed up with libraries across the state for a fishing rod lending program too. So, you will be able to go to your local library and check out a fishing rod.

If you’re new to fishing, don’t worry. The NYDEC has your back with plenty of resources, including a ‘Beginners Guide to Freshwater Fishing.’ This guide covers everything from setting up your fishing rod to identifying different fish and understanding the rules.

Just a heads up: even though you don’t need a fishing license this weekend, all other fishing regulations are still in effect. So make sure you follow the rules to keep everything running smoothly.

Get out there and fish this weekend June 29th and 30th. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, try something new, and maybe even catch dinner. Happy fishing!
