Iconic New York Sports & Music Venue Turns 50
The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a cement structure that is located in Uniondale, New York. It opened February 11th in 1972 and will never win any awards for a beautiful exterior or a functional interior. A few years back, Long Island architects wrapped a giant Slinky around it and brought in fancy port-a-johns to try and modernize the facility. The venue earned the nickname the "Old Barn" and no amount of 'lipstick' will really change that.

On Friday, the Nassau Coliseum turns 50 years-old. Every major musician from Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Paul McCartney, to Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, U2, Matallica, Billy Joel and some form of the Grateful Dead 44 different times, targeted a concert run at the Nassau Coliseum. It's an intimate venue to play with 14,000 of your best friends.

In June, the New York Islanders said goodbye to their home building that hosted the franchises' four Stanley Cup championships. The Islanders said goodbye defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in a thrilling overtime, capped with an explosion of emotion. The Old Barn was waving so long to the NHL franchise and a fanbase that called the "Coli" home.

From Julius Erving and the New York Nets to the four Stanley Cup championships that the Islanders brought to the people of Long Island, the Nassau Coliseum was a special venue for those of us that grew up nearby. The teams always embraced the the local towns.
They seemed to enjoy being part of the Long Island community. The "Coli" is where we all saw our first concerts, where icons from record albums and magazines became real-life performers. So, Happy 50th Birthday to a really cool venue that was the home of a ton of memories for me and many others!
