If you've been wondering how you can assist the people of Ukraine from right here in the Capital Region, the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet has put together a list of items they are gathering to help those fleeing from and caught in the middle of the Russian invasion.
The items needed are as follows:
- Clothes for all ages: jeans, t-shirts, fleece, underwear, raincoats, backpacks
- Bedding: blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, mattresses, thermal covers, tents, cots
- Personal hygiene: toothpaste, toothbrushes, adult diapers, sanitary wipes, tampons, razors
- Children's items: diapers, bottles, shampoo, pacifiers, bath towels, baby formula
- Reusable spoons, forks, knives, plastic glasses, scizzors
- Health items: reusable and disposable masks, antiseptics, syringes, bandages, tourniquets, thermometers, first aid kits
- Food: energy bars, dried fruits, canned food, instant food
- Batteries, candles, flashlights, charging stations, sewing kits
Items can be dropped off Monday-Friday between 5pm and 7pm at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church at 2410 4th Ave in Watervliet.
Donations are also being accepted at Euro Deli and Market, 231 Wade Rd. Extension in Latham - the same shopping center as Target. They will be collecting items during their regular operating hours and getting them over to the church.
Monetary donations are also being accepted through St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Troy, where you can donate online or mail your donation to 376 3rd St Troy, NY 12180.
The amount of refugees fleeing Ukraine is expected to hit as many as one million very soon. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces and civilian fighters are resisting a heavy bombing campaign by the Russian military.
