Called Out for Being an Awkward Hugger

Last week, our friend and fellow content contributor Kristi Gustafson Barlette (KGB) from the Times Union commented to me about an "awkward" hug I (apparently) gave her while inside a barn at Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont.

It was a chilly Sunday afternoon and me and Chrissy were at the family farm for their annual naming of the baby animals, and I was happy to see KGB and her two daughters.

Now, bear in mind, my son was there, Chrissy, her wife, and son Ryan, as well as other familiar faces, and a bunch of GNA listeners were there as well, so it was sensory overload as I leaned in to hug her.

"You Need to Work on Your Hugs

The hug I gave her that day wasn't up to KGB's standards, and I had no way of knowing this had it not been for the text that was sent to me later in the afternoon.  Long after the event had ended, Kristi texted me something she had to get off her chest. "I think you need to work on your hugs," she wrote, adding, "I say that as a non-hugger."

That simple, somewhat innocuous text turned into something bigger later in the week when we turned it into some on-air content.  Is Brian an awkward hugger?

I Don't Think I'm an "Awkward" Hugger

We re-enacted the hug and posted it on social media on Thursday and the results were mixed.  While some suggested that the hug I gave KGB was certainly "barn appropriate", others including some of Chrissy and Brian's family had plenty to say, as did a vast majority of GNA listeners.

This week, I'll be making my way around town giving out "Free Hugs" to anyone interested along with a QR code so that you can rate it on a scale of 1-5.  KGB will be joining the show later in the week to go over the results of the survey.
