Fall is all about football, fall beers, and fo course the stunning foliage hee in Upstate New York. And while we are weeks away from peak colors, mother nature's brush strokes are already starting to appear in certain areas of Upstate New York.

I Love NY Reveals First Foliage Report of 2022

I Love NY, which provides weekly foliage updates throughout the season, has released its first report for 2022 for the week of September 14 - 20. And while it is early, there are some areas in higher elevations where the vivid, yellows, reds, and oranges of fall are beginning to break through. Within a decent day drive of the Capital Region, I Love NY says the following areas are just starting to see color change:

  • In the Adirondacks, areas like Saranac, Placid,  and Long Lake are seeing 5 to 10 percent color change. In Tupper, some spots have changed 20 percent and Old Forge will be seeing a 30 percent change this weekend.
  • In the Catskills the area os Hunter and Windham have some yellows breaking through with less than 10 percent change expected by the weekend.

Other areas like Thousand Islands on the Northern edge of the state and the Hudson Valley are seeing some minor changes as well, and you can see the full New York state foliage tracking map here.
