See the Northern Lights Over New York Tonight, Here Are the Best Spots
There is nothing quite like witnessing an early morning sunrise or a late afternoon sunset. From the orange and red skies of summer to the piercing blue and pink shades of autumn could anything match its magic? Perhaps the Northern Lights.
On Thursday November 6th there will be a few places around New York State that offer your best opportunities to see this natural light display. This real light show in the sky doesn't happen every day so see if you can check it out tonight.

The Northern Lights, according to Michigan Tech, is created by the sun's charged particles colliding with gases in Earth's atmosphere. These particles are traveling from the sun and, when they mix with oxygen and nitrogen, they start to glow in gorgeous greens, purples, and reds.
The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that certain locations around New York State stand a good chance at seeing the Northern Lights tonight.
Pay attention to the red line in the image above. Areas North of that line have the chance, depending on cloud cover, to witness the Northern Lights.
A closer look at the maps will show that the Hudson Valley and the Adirondacks have a GOOD chance to see the Northern Lights tonight. The Capital Region and points west have a fair chance. A lot depends on cloud cover.
Here are some tips for an increased chance to see the Northern Lights:
- Location - After dark, find a higher elevation place where you have an unobstructed view to the north.
- Get away from city lights.
- Timing - The best viewing times tend to be between 10pm and 2am.
