Upstate NY Woman Facing Jail Time for Massive Wegmans Wire Fraud

A woman from Upstate New York pled guilty to wire fraud charges and is now facing prison time, after it was discovered that the 48-year old had been defrauding the Wegmans grocery store chain for years.

Before entering into a guilty plea, the 25-year Wegmans veteran was facing up to 20 years in prison for her crimes. We have the latest updates on this case, as the person involved certainly took shoplifting to a whole new level.

Upstate NY Wegmans Employee Facing Jail Time After Defrauding Grocery Chain

A story from New York Upstate introduced us to Alicia Torres, a long-time Wegmans employee who will now serve a prison sentence after it was discovered that she had defrauded the grocery chain out of $568,000.

The woman pled guilty back in June, and was sentenced earlier this week.

Torres stole over half a million dollars through fraudulent credit card refunds. Reports claim that she would have pharmacists at the store sign off on what appeared to be legitimate refunds for prescription drugs, then use her own debit card to claim the refunded money.

This practice happened for about ten years, from 2014 through 2023.

In addition to that practice, she also stole $10,922.17 from Wegmans through the use of gift cards. That occurred from 2020 through 2023, according to the report.

Torres is now facing a one-year prison sentence after pleading guilty. She also now owes an eye-popping $578,943.86 in restitution. The situation could've been far worse, as NY Upstate reports that her wire fraud charges could've landed her in prison for 20 years.
