New York Mets’ Polar Bear Gets Beaned On Wrist; Forced From Game
Tuesday night in Atlanta, New York Mets first baseman, Pete Alonso hit his league leading 22nd home run of the season. While rounding the bases, the Home Run Derby champ yelled at Braves pitcher Bryce Elder.
The Mets' "Polar Bear" chirped "throw it again" at the young Atlanta starter. The Braves did not take kindly to Alonso's words. Not only did they get their revenge immediately on Alonso by coming back and winning the game 6-4, but the Mets first baseman paid the price again on Wednesday.
Alonso was forced to exit Wednesday's game between the two National League East rivals in the first inning after Braves' pitcher 16-year veteran Charlie Morton went "old school" on the Polar Bear and stuck a 96 mph fastball on the Home Run Derby King's wrist. Mets manager Buck Showalter and the the training staff examined Alonso and he was removed from the game. The Mets and SNY's roving in-game reporter, Steve Gelbs gave an update on the slugger in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Gelbs reported that Pete Alonso's X-ray was negative and reported that the 28-year old has a contusion. SNY said that Alonso will be evaluated day-to-day. Pete Alonso leads the Major Leagues in home runs with (22) and leads the National League in RBIs with (49). Tommy Pham, who replaced the injured Alonso in the line-up, launched a two-run home run in the 5th.
