Cashman Holds The Cards To Bring Juan Soto To The Bronx
If New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman wants to add to his World Championship legacy in the Bronx, then he needs play some of his precious prospect-cards, now.
With Aaron Judge's big toe in question, that it could be a problem for, at least, the remainder of the season, it's time for Cashman to go all-in before the trade deadline, in a few weeks. Why would the Bronx Bomber's GM try to win a World Series with Jake Bauers and Billy McKinney in the outfield? Especially, when you have the prospects to acquire an impact player, with the talent of Juan Soto, even if it is a season-and-a-half rental. Just win now.
Every Yankees fan knows Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu are struggling. Josh Donaldson has been worse than that. Aaron Boone's line-up needs life. New York's starting pitching and the bullpen have been terrific. Without Judge, the Pinstripes' one through nine is not championship caliber. Soto would change that.
Soto won't come cheap. The Padres are not completely out of it yet. Padres' GM AJ Preller gave up 5 players for Juan Soto, including one of San Diego's top young pitchers, McKenzie Gore, and their top infield prospect, CJ Abrams. None of the players are blowing it up for Washington. Prospects are just that, prospects. There are no guarantees. Brian Cashman more than has the prospect/major league inventory to get Juan Soto from Preller.
Here is the deal. If Yankee fans want a World Championship, then they can't criticize Cashman when he mortgages a bit of the future. New York would likely have to part with blue-chip infield prospect Oswald Peraza, possibly outfield prospect, the Martian, Jasson Domínguez and a few other low level prospects. Too much? Then you don't get a player like Juan Soto. San Diego may hold onto their star-outfielder. But, knowing the way San Diego has played so far and the fact that A.J. Preller likes to make a splash every year at the deadline, the Padres may just play into Brian Cashman's hand. If Preller deals, the Yankees definitely would have the cards to win the 2023 World Championship. Sometimes, you have to go all-in. This is one of those times.
