Invasive Clam Taking Over Lake George
Surveys done on Lake George have found an invasive Asian clam in two more locations, bringing the colonies of clams up to four. The initial clam outbreak was near the village off Lake Avenue, but then more clams turned up in Boon Bay six miles north of Bolton Landing. The latest colonies of clams have been found in Norowal Marina in Bolton and Treasure Cove Resort and Beckley’s Boat Launch at Diamond Point, according to the Lake George Association.
This summer, divers tried to eradicate the clam from the Lake Avenue outbreak by placing five acres of mats on the lake bottom in an effort to smother and kill the clams. Clams, if you don't know, prefer shallow waters and sandy lake bottoms -- of course, right where swimmers typically enter the lake.
