CMT Picking Up ‘Nashville’ for Season 5
Nashville fans have gotten their wish: CMT will be picking up the TV show for its fifth season.
The network announced the news on Friday (June 10). Earlier that day, the Tennessean reported that a "unique deal" was reached on Thursday (June 9) for Season 5 of Nashville to be broadcast and streamed on CMT, as well as streamed on Hulu (which currently carries the show's previous seasons). New Nashville episodes will be available on the streaming service the day after they air on CMT.
“CMT heard the fans. The wave of love and appreciation they have unleashed for Nashville has been overwhelming,” says Brian Philips, president of CMT. “Nashville is a perfect addition to our evolving lineup of big music specials, documentaries and original series. We see our fans and ourselves in this show, and we will treasure it like no other network. Nashville belongs on CMT.”
According to the Tennessean, the full cast is expected to return, but Entertainment Weekly reports that deals have not yet officially been reached. Lionsgate does have long-term deals with Nashville‘s castmembers, and prior to ABC's decision to cancel the show, Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz had been hired as Season 5’s showrunners.
Nashville's fifth season will be 22 episodes long, per EW. Variety first reported that CMT was "eyeing" the series on Tuesday (June 7).
Nashville's former network home, ABC, canceled the show on May 12, and almost immediately, fans and the series' production company, Lionsgate, began lobbying to find the show a new home. Following Nashville's Season 4 finale, which aired on May 25, Lionsgate executives reported that “four to five different platforms” had expressed interest in picking up the show for an additional season (thanks, in part, to the cliffhanger in the fourth season finale).
“These kinds of shows can go forever and ever — obviously that’s our hope and expectation, but we’ve [got] to do it one season at a time. So right now, we’re all about Season 5,” Kevin Beggs, Lionsgate’s head of TV, said at the time. “So we hope to land Season 5 and keep talking about this show for years to come.”
