One of our favorite Capital Region small towns has been named one of the best in the state of New York!

One of the beauties of living in the Capital Region is no matter what your lifestyle preference is, be it the city or small-town life, there are plenty of options to choose the flavor that best suits you. In the midst and in the shadow of the tri-cities of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy are a multitude of amazing small-towns. One of them has received a pretty high honor from a well-established travel magazine.

TRAVEL + LEISURE (T+L) has named Chatham, our local small-town wonder, one of the best small towns in New York state. The magazine chose these towns based on population density (All are 10,000 people or less), access to nature, and just being great destinations for what the magazine calls "...balance-restoring getaways." Here is some of what T+L had to say about Chatham:

"Smack between the Hudson River and the Berkshires, Chatham is a classic upstate small town. Among all the rolling farmland and nature preserves are heritage sites, craft breweries and cideries, and excellent American eats."

Whether it is for a downtown stroll, a great meal, or a visit to the fair at the Columbia Country Fairgrounds, the charm of Chatham is no secret to those of us living here in the Capital Region. That said it is pretty cool to see this quaint town get some national love where the hot spots like Saratoga Springs and Lake George usually shine (Though Lake George did make this list as well).

Now maybe you have never been to Chatham and this honor has you plotting a little trip to this Columbia County gem. Be sure to check out the Visit Chatham website to plot that day trip to a town that the website says includes  "...distinctive specialty shops, (an) array of casual and fine dining, and a vibrant art scene.

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
