Taylor Swift on Why She Made Up With Kanye West
Taylor Swift has officially buried the hatchet on what is now collectively remembered as 'The Kanye Incident' at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, she says in a new interview with Vanity Fair.
“I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with [West] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me," Swift explains of her relationship with the rap/hip-hop mogul, "so it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time.”
Swift apparently credits mutual friend Jay Z for the repaired rift — he made the friendship between the two a personal priority.
“I became friends with Jay Z, and I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along ... And then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid’s doing," the country-pop icon recalls.
As fans will remember, the Kanye Incident was a moment that would live in infamy — or at least pop culture history — for years to come. An unsuspecting Swift had stepped up to the mic at the 2009 VMAs, happy to accept the award for Best Female Video, when West interrupted with those now-famous words, “I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!”
A stunned, 19-year-old Swift stared at West and accepted the mic back, unsure of how to recover.
Fortunately, poise in the spotlight has always been a strong suit for the "Red" superstar, and the hiccup didn’t get her down for long. Since then, she has hit the fast-forward button on her career and is now widely recognized as one of the most influential celebrities in the world. This status was most notably validated by her open letter to Apple (also discussed in the Vanity Fair issue), which prompted a change in its new Apple Music streaming policy in less than 24 hours.
The artist is currently on her 1989 world tour and was recently named one of the top-earning celebrities in the world by Forbes, alongside her boyfriend Calvin Harris. Together, the two are the highest-earning celebrity couple in the world. Swift's Vanity Fair cover issue hits stands Aug. 11.
