There is a new law that will require animal shelters to do something that I thought they already did. The main reason I got this done to my dog was because I thought it was already a requirement in case he winds up at a shelter. A new law that will take affect this year will require animal shelters to scan the stray animal that comes into their facility for a microchip. How is this not already a law? The main reason I got my dog, Freddie, microchipped was for that reason. If he went missing and wound up at a shelter, they would be able to contact me right away.

I don't understand why they wouldn't be doing this all along. I guess the good news is it will be a requirement now. Shelters will also be required to make an effort to notify the owner within 24 hours if a microchip is located. This new law will take place in March.
