Taylor Swift Plays Piano in New Film ‘The Giver’
Even though the piano and guitar-playing singer was cast for the part of Rosemary, the character was written as someone who played the piano before the producers even had Swift on their minds. After auditioning several actresses, they saw the 'Red' hitmaker in concert, and realized she would be perfect for the part. She was offered the role the following week.
“She’s a very soulful, interesting young woman and we had this very out-of-the box idea that maybe it would make sense that she could be our Rosemary,” producer Nikki Silver explains. “And she’s fantastic. I’ve spent a lot of time with her, and she had just been looking to dip her toe slightly in acting.”
In the book, Rosemary plays the former “receiver of memory,” which is the current job of the book’s main character, Jonas. Her presence in the book takes place in flashbacks, so it will be interesting to see what the movie adaptation will be.
After she was cast, Swift flew to the set in South Africa to film, sharing scenes with Jeff Bridges while also getting to know the rest of a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes and Aussie actor Brenton Thwaites.
Silver says Swift did “a really wonderful job.” She went brunette for the role, and things seemingly worked out serendipitously. “She was interested, we were interested,” Silver adds. “It was one of things that was timing and just happened.”
