30 Years Ago Today

I was born!  That’s actually hard for me to write!  I always thought birthdays were fun, exciting, and should be National Holidays!  Until now.  This one is hitting kinda hard!

Here’s what was going on 30 years ago –

McDonald’s came out with the McNugget!

My Little Pony, CareBears, The A -Team, Reading Rainbow and Mama’s Family were dominating TV.

Plinko debuted on The Price is Right.

Everyone was dancing the Moonwalk.

The Disney Channel launched.

AOL launched.

The Sony Camcorder became available to consumers.

Everyone was playing Mario Brothers at the arcade.

The Dodge Caravan became the Mom-mobile of choice.

Sweet Valley High was the book every tween girl was reading.

Everyone wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid.

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi came out.

D.A.R.E. was taking over schools everywhere.

Trump Tower was built.

Microsoft Word came out.

Sally Ride and Guion Bluford—the first American woman and the first African-American—went into space.

Apple released its Apple IIe personal computer, often stylized as the Apple //e. It featured the ability to display lowercase letters.

The most popular computer was the Commodore 64.  It had 64 kilobytes of RAM.  The iPhone in your pocket has 16,000 times that amount.

And here are some things that happened on this day in history –

225 years ago . . . in 1789 –GEORGE WASHINGTON was elected the FIRST PRESIDENT.

40 years ago . . . in 1974 – PATTY HEARST was kidnapped from her Berkeley apartment by three members of the Symbionese Liberation Army.

31 years ago . . . in 1983 – KAREN CARPENTER died at age 32.  She had anorexia.

27 years ago . . . in 1987 – Pianist LIBERACE died at age 67.  He had AIDS.

21 years ago . . . in 1993 – The Boston Celtics retired LARRY BIRD’S number, 33.

17 years ago . . . in 1997 – A civil jury in Santa Monica, California, found O.J. SIMPSON liable for the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman . . . even though the law said he was absolutely, positively 100% INNOCENT.

10 years ago . . . in 2004 – A website called THEFACEBOOK was launched by a Harvard sophomore named Mark Zuckerberg.
