A small earthquake registering 3.1 on the Richter scale gave the greater Glens Falls area a brief shake earlier this morning.

Maybe you felt your house the ground shake for a brief moment this morning and thought you were imagining things. No, your senses were not fooling you. A small quake hitting 3.1 on the Richter scale occurred at 6:43 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

I was getting my day started when I felt a slight rumble at our home in Clifton Park. It felt just like when a big plow or garbage truck drives by the house, but then when I realized no truck was in the area, I thought I was losing my mind. Turns out I was not! We got other reports of residents feeling it in Glenville and Ballston Spa, but those right in the Glens Falls area really felt the ground shaking this morning. You can see some of their comments on our Facebook page here.

From the looks of the USGS website, small quakes like this are not uncommon in the Northeast. Two other small quakes were recorded over the last couple weeks in Maine and New Hampshire.
