Ronnie Dunn Working With Garth Brooks, Toby Keith for Moore Benefit Concert
On the heels of Blake Shelton's 'Healing in the Heartland' benefit concert, three more of Oklahoma's biggest stars are teaming up in the name of relief for Moore, Okla. tornado victims. Ronnie Dunn says he is joining forces Garth Brooks to help Toby Keith with an upcoming event he is igniting.
Dunn confirmed his participation to Tulsa World. Neither Brooks or Keith have officially announced anything, but the Brooks and Dunn hitmakers says it's a sure thing. "Big day working to put another Okla. benefit together. Garth good to go with a date. Toby is good (?) waiting to announce," he posted to Twitter on Tuesday (May 28).
Dunn says it's likely the benefit will take place during the 4th of July weekend, somewhere in Norman, Okla. "There are a lot of moving parts to work out," he stresses, adding that he thinks an official announcement should be forthcoming within the next 24 hours. "But this is what we're aiming for."
The now-solo legend was near Moore in Shawnee, Okla. on May 20 when the tornado hit. He was on his tour bus and kept getting calls and emails that he should check the weather. "We high-tailed it out of there to safety just as the tornado hit Moore," he relates. When he watched the news later and saw that Keith was already back in his hometown of Moore, he figured the singer would be busy in the coming weeks.
"I talked to Garth, and he agreed that we'd keep our heads down until Blake's thing was done and until Toby took the lead," Dunn says. "We'd be the 'second wave' of efforts to help people, because there is a need for a second wave."
He adds, "There will be a need for months and months to come."
This will actually be the second time Dunn has worked with Keith on a benefit for Moore; he performed with him in 1999 after another tornado disaster swept through the town. "I was there in '99, and again in 2003," he states.
