Not everyone uses traditional condiments and some of these choices made by Upstate New Yorkers are questionable.

If you think about it anything can be a condiment or a topping if you want it to be. The big question is how out of the ordinary is your favorite one? Would it make people raise an eyebrow or worse, gag?

Obviously taste is totally subjective and not everyone is going to like the same things. As a matter of fact sometimes you can totally skip the condiments if whatever your eating has enough flavor in the first place. So how do we define what a condiment even is?

Condiment

According to the literal dictionary:

something used to enhance the flavor of food

especially a pungent seasoning
If it does anything to enhance the flavor of what you're eating it is in fact a condiment. It doesn't have to be one of the traditional ones that are found in the labeled aisle in the grocery store.
According to Strawpoll the most popular condiment in the United States is ketchup. That doesn't really surprise me because people out it on everything. That's followed by mayo, mustard, and BBQ sauce.
What are some of the odd ball choices we got told when asking about non-traditional ones?

I could see some of the options given as good choices. Others not so much.

  • Steak sauce
  • blood (okay, settle down)
  • Thai curry paste
  • Honey
  • Spit (what?)

I think the only one I am guilty of using as a non-traditional one is probably thousand island dressing. I've put that on many things. Also hot sauce on hot dogs. Don't knock it until you try it.
