Florida Georgia Line Find It Hard to NOT Write About Their Wives
When Florida Georgia Line released their debut single, "Cruise," in 2012, Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard were both single. Fast forward four years, and Kelley has been married almost three years while Hubbard recently celebrated his one-year anniversary. Both guys say their wives helped inspire several of the songs on their new album, Dig Your Roots, including the recent chart-topper "H.O.L.Y."
"I think any relationship affects your songwriting," Hubbard recently told The Boot and other reporters. "I think anything we go through in life affects our songwriting. So, obviously, meeting our wives and getting married has been a huge step in our life and a huge blessing on a lot of levels: personally, emotionally, spiritually, our work. From all aspects and all angles, it’s just been so much better having them as a teammate and having them be a part of this ride with us."
However, their significant others can create an interesting problem when Kelley and Hubbard sit down to write.
"It almost makes it hard to not want to write every song about them. It’s like, ‘Can we write a song from a different perspective today? Because we’ve been writing about our wives for the last week, and I’m sure everybody is getting sick of it, including our wives, probably,'" Hubbard admits. "But it is fun, and our wives, we have to thank them for a lot of inspiration, a lot of creative freedom. It’s amazing how we really do feel like it was just ordained by God, meant to be, and we’re better all together than apart. It’s really special."
Both Kelley and Hubbard started out as worship leaders, which is why it's important to them to include a spiritual element in each of their records as well.
"I think we’re more spiritual than ever," Kelley acknowledges. "I think we’re growing up, day by day, trying to be better people, better humans, better friends, better businessmen; I think we’re in a cool place. Tyler and I have spent a lot of time working on ourselves and working on our relationship, and getting this thing to a place where it can run smoothly and we can really enjoy it."
