I never knew this was a thing, but apparently utility companies used to be able to charge a termination fee when a customer passed away.

I know, it's hard to believe! It has been common practice but some utility companies have charged termination fees when a customer passed away, Which ultimately means someone's family would have to end up paying these. Sounds completely insensitive, right?

Well, the good news is this is now illegal. According to Governor Cuomo's office, new legislation has been signed that makes charging these fees illegal. Companies could now face a $1,000 fine for charging such fees. Governor Cuomo called the fees 'heartless and inappropriate.'

Kudos to the state for getting this one right! And shame on any companies who did this in the oast!
