Additional Information

New York State played a pivotal role in the Civil War. As the wealthiest and most populous state, the Empire State led all others in supplying men, money, and matériel to the causes of unity and freedom. Its experience provides significant insight into the reasons why the war was fought and the meaning that the Civil War holds today.

New York State’s Office of Cultural Education—the State Museum, Library, and Archives— presents this rich and complex story in a 6,500-square-foot exhibition at the New York State Museum. An Irrepressible Conflict unfolds in three sections—Antebellum New York, The Civil War 1861-1865, and Reconstruction and Legacy. Visitors will discover Civil War-related sites across the state and know New York's great legacy in the defining moment of American history.
