A severe thunderstorm hit the New York State Fair on Sunday afternoon, bringing the festivities to a halt. Although the meteorologists aren't calling it a tornado, some fairgoers witnessed something else.

According to WSYR, heavy rain and strong winds blew through the New York State Fairgrounds, causing staff to close the gates for two hours. Those who were already inside were told to take shelter. The strong thunderstorms caused the jumbotron at the NY State Police exhibit to collapse, tents were destroyed, and flooding occurred throughout the west end of the fair.

Alicia Wojick, who was waiting for a ride home from the New York State Fair, said that they made an announcement to take shelter, and then her phone sent out a tornado warning alert signal.

She took these pictures waiting at the fair and also on her ride home.

She went on to say that the storm "came barreling through Galeville". It broke their fence and severed a tree across from their home.

This serves as a helpful reminder of what to do in the event of a tornado warning. Here are some tips from the New York State Division of Homeland Security.

If a tornado is on the way, your safety depends on where you are. At home, head to the basement or the lowest interior room, away from windows; bathrooms or closets work best.

Cover yourself with something sturdy, like a mattress. In schools, hospitals, or shopping centers, follow the signs to a designated shelter and avoid big open spaces. If you’re in a high-rise, move to a hallway or small interior room on a lower floor, and always take the stairs.

Mobile homes and cars aren’t safe, so get out immediately. With no shelter nearby, lie flat in a ditch and protect your head.

Remembering these safety tips could save your life and the lives of those you care about.
