Capital Region Mayors gathered today to announce a federal grant to help homeless veterans.Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Troy Mayor Lou Rosamilia, Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy, and Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne Yepsen gathered today to announce that the area will receive just over $292,000 in federal funds to help homeless veterans.

The above cities are just some of the Capital Region cities that will share in the federal funds.  It is unknown if the cities will work together or create individual programs.  The goal of the federal HUD program is to end the issue of homeless veterans nationwide by the end of 2015.

The grant money is set to help veterans both homeless and those in danger of losing their homes retain permanent housing.

$65 million will be distributed to help more than 9,300 homeless veterans around the country.

The VA has reported that since 2010, veteran homelessness is down 33 percent.
