This New York Walmart In the Capital Region Is Limiting Use Of Self-Checkout
Experts say that retail theft occurs every single day in the United States. According to Capital One Shopping, stores across the Nation lost an estimated $121 billion to retail theft in 2023. New York State stores reported a total loss of $9 billion in sales revenue last year.
One New York Walmart location in the Capital Region is making what could appear as a minor change in policy with the hope of eliminating some big losses.
Earlier this year the biggest Walmart in America, located at Crossgates Commons in Albany, NY, changed their policy. Now the Walmart Supercenter located on Route 9W in Glenmont, NY. is following suit.
Starting immediately, shoppers at the Glenmont, NY Walmart location will only be allowed to use the self-checkout lanes with 15 items or less, which mirrors the policy the Crossgates Commons location put in place earlier this year.
Advantage Solutions reports that the self-checkout lanes were originally created to help the flow of customers allowing them to move quickly through the checkout areas and on their way. Self-checkout was also designed to reduce or re-assign part-time employees to other tasks.
The "express self-checkout" with a limited number of items is nothing new. Earlier this year Target implemented this policy at the majority of their 2,000 stores. Nearly 80% of shoppers use self-checkout at least occasionally while 50% of shoppers use self-checkout for the majority of their shopping.
