Have you heard of New York's 'Move Over Law'? This law is designed to protect law enforcement officers, emergency workers, tow and service vehicle operators and other maintenance workers stopped along roadways. Simply put, if you see emergency lights, vests or reflectors you need to move over.

According to the New York State Police, Trooper Robert Schaeffer was performing a traffic stop on I-95 with emergency lights activated. As Schaeffer was exiting his patrol vehicle, a passing motorist failed to obey the “Move Over” law and took the door off the patrol vehicle.

New York State Police report that Trooper Schaeffer survived with minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. Schaeffer was fortunate in this situation but according to the Centers for Disease Control, In 2021, there were 27 law enforcement officer struck-by fatalities. Struck-by fatalities are one of the leading circumstances for traffic-related law enforcement officer fatalities.

Here are some important items to know in regard to the Move Over Law;

  • If you see red, white, blue, green or amber lighting slow down
  • On multiple lane roadways, move over and away from the emergency as soon as it's safe to do so
  • Violations of this law are punishable as a moving violation

New York State Police Canine Unit

Here is a partial list of the New York State Police K9 Unit. This division was created in 1975. The original three canines were put into service as explosives detection canines in preparation for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York.

New York State Police canines are named in honor of the men and women of the state police who have died in the line of duty.
