It's been a wild, somewhat terrifying summer in New York thus far.

The state has experienced extremely volatile weather patterns in recent weeks, which have wreaked havoc on local communities. High temperatures and humidity levels are largely to blame for this, but the state has also fallen victim to the ripple effect of Hurricane Beryl, which has further complicated matters.

The severity of the storms has ranged; some areas have experienced thunderstorms with intense wind gusts, while others, like the city of Rome (shown above) and the town of Eden, have dealt with something more rare in our state: tornadoes.

Per the source, [t]his is the highest number of reported tornadoes in New York State for the month of July since records began in 1950. The previous record was 13 tornadoes in 1992.

The twisters have come in bunches this month. Seven tornadoes alone were confirmed on July 10, 2024, including an EF-2 storm that ravaged the city of Rome. It brought wind speeds of up to 135 MPH, according to WSYR.

Nine other tornadoes have been confirmed this month, including a storm that ripped through the town of Eden. You can see the damage done by that storm in the video above.

Unfortunately, the severe weather is expected to continue. Thunderstorms are in the forecast on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, and are a possibility during the middle of next week.

If severe weather is expected in your area, please make an effort to stay away from doors and windows, and if need be, seek shelter in a basement.
