New York Baseball Legend’s Son Commits To Maryland Football

When your dad was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1984 and the NL Cy Young Award winner in 1985, on his way to a 16-year MLB career, well, people may expect you to play baseball in college. However, this hurler's offspring excels at a different pastime. He harasses quarterbacks and does it quite well.

Dylan Gooden, the son of former New York Mets and Yankees right-hander Dwight Gooden, who is a friend of The Drive with Charlie & Dan, committed Wednesday to playing football at the University of Maryland. According to Ryan McFadden of the Baltimore Sun, the son of MLB star verbally committed to the Terps in December but officially signed his NCAA Letter of Intent on Wednesday.

NJ.com reported that Rutgers was in the mix to land Gooden's son. The article says that Dylan and his parents visited the New Jersey campus in June. NJ Advance Media’s Todderick Hunt provided the following scouting report of Doc Gooden's son:

"Gooden is an athletic, crafty player, who excels mostly by using his hands to swipe blockers off his frame, freeing himself up to make plays. He immediately rids of contact, allowing his quickness to shine as he runs down quarterbacks and ball-carriers like a cheetah hunting its prey, and sets his edge."

"Gooden can also stack-release, push-pull, has an assortment of arm-over-and-under moves and, generally, doesn’t get blocked. He always gets his hands up, batting passes and blocking passing windows for quarterbacks not in his grasp, and field goal attempts by kickers."
