If you're a New York resident aged 62 or older, there’s a little known perk you should absolutely be taking advantage of. It's called the Golden Park Program, and it offers free weekday vehicle access to most of New York’s beautiful state parks, scenic boat launches, peaceful arboretums, and even discounts at state operated historic sites and golf courses. It’s one of those programs that sounds too good to be true, but it's very real, and very easy to use.

No Applications, Just Your ID

The beauty of the Golden Park Program is in its simplicity. There’s no complicated paperwork or application process to deal with. All you need is a currently valid New York State Driver License or a New York State Non-Driver Identification Card. That’s it.

Just show your ID at the park entrance Monday through Friday (excluding holidays), and you're in. If the location has an automated pay station instead of a gate attendant, it's a good idea to call ahead and ask how they handle Golden Park admissions.

A Few Exceptions to Keep in Mind

While the program covers most New York State Parks and facilities, there are a few places where it doesn’t apply. These include Walkway Over the Hudson, Earl W. Brydges Artpark, Lake Superior State Park, Fahnestock Winter Park, Mark Twain State Park, Soaring Eagles Golf Course, and Ganondagan State Historic Site. So, if you're planning a visit to any of these spots, know that regular fees will still apply.

Where to Get More Information

If you’re wondering whether your favorite park or launch site participates in the program, you’ve got options. You can contact your nearest state park or the regional state park office in your area. You can also reach out to New York State Parks directly in Albany by calling 518-474-0456. If you’re hearing impaired, assistance is available through the 711 Relay Service.

Don’t Have the Right ID?

In order to participate in the Golden Park Program, you’ll need to have a valid New York State-issued Driver License or Non-Driver Identification Card. If you don’t have one yet, you can apply for one through your local DMV office. It’s a good idea to contact them before you go so you know exactly which forms of identification and documents you’ll need to bring.
