Beaver Moon: Biggest Supermoon of Year Appears This Week
The biggest and brightest full moon of the year, known as the Beaver Moon, will light up the sky this week. This one is a “supermoon,” which means the moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth, making it look larger and glow a little more than usual.
Here in the Capital Region, the best times to see it will be the evenings of Tuesday, November 4th, and Wednesday, November 5th, since the moon will technically reach its peak brightness in the morning when it’s below the horizon. Around sunset, the moon will rise looking big and slightly orange, thanks to a trick our brains play when comparing it to trees and buildings nearby.
If you really want to take in the view, the Adirondacks will be an incredible place to watch. The wide-open skies, crisp fall air, and lack of city lights make it one of the best spots in the state to soak up that supermoon glow.
The name “Beaver Moon” comes from a time when Native Americans and early trappers set their beaver traps before the ponds froze for winter. Others say it’s tied to the animals’ own flurry of activity this time of year as they prepare for the colder months ahead.
Whether you catch it from your backyard or a quiet spot up north, this November supermoon is a reminder that winter is on the way and nature still knows how to put on a show.
