Isn't that a beautiful lawn leading up to the banks of the Mohawk River? Psych!!! That's not grass at all. It's part of the river. So what the hell IS that stuff?

I am Long Island born and raised. I've lived on the water all of my life. And yes, I've seen seaweed and other forms of of it on the shoreline- even floating in the water, but I've never seen MILES if it, and so thick that you can't see the water at all! I'm going to leave this open ended. What IS that stuff? Can you safely swim in it? Do people cast a line and try to fish THROUGH it? Could you imagine dropping your cellphone in it?

Here's another view of it

Very weird, and very disgusting, whatever it is. I'd love to know the answer!
