Today we carry on the tradition of the first Flag Day observance.

Americans observe Flag Day each year on June 14. This is the date when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes and issued the first U.S. Flag in 1777.

This year’s Flag Day is extra special because 2014 also marks the 200th anniversary of our national anthem. The lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner written by Francis Scott Key were of course inspired by the Flag.

Did you know there is a Federal Flag Code? It contains the rules for handling and displaying the U.S. Flag.

The Flag should be displayed frequently - especially on national and state holidays and special occasions - like today.
