The Times Union published a great article about the safest New York towns and cities. In the article they used recently published F.B.I. crime statistics to find the areas in the Capital Region with the lowest violent crime. You might find some of the results surprising.

According to the article, the Times Union used a formula to figure out the violent crime rate per 100,000 residents. I am grateful that they took the time to figure all of that out because it makes in much easier to compare than the original report.

According to the Times Union the top 5 safest towns/cities in the Capital Region are:

1. Chatham: Violent crimes per 100,000 residents: 0

2. Guilderland: Violent crimes per 100,000 residents: 29

3.Potsdam:  Violent crimes per 100,000 residents: 31  (Not Really Capital District but made the list)

4. Niskayuna: Violent crimes per 100,000 residents: 49

5. Glenville: Violent crimes per 100,000 residents: 50

Check out the rest of the list here.

Naturally I was curious about my own place of residence, Clifton Park and I could not find it on the list, I did however find my hometown of Gloversville on the original F.B.I. report and after my own tabulations estimate the violent crime per 100,000 residents to be over 500, 10 times that of Glenville. Ugh.
