A song by Sturgill Simpson, "Sugar Daddy," has been selected as the theme song for HBO's new series Vinyl.

The show, which is being executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter, focuses on a music executive in New York City in the 1970s who is trying to save his record company. Randall Poster and Meghan Currier are serving as the show's music supervisors.

"We cast a wide net. It had to serve a larger purpose than something that was just episodic. It's not that it serves as a narrative,” Poster says of selecting Vinyl's theme song. "Sturgill just captured this spirit of rock 'n' roll. It feels classic and contemporary."

Simpson's music -- especially his most recent album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music -- has earned awards and critical acclaim. The singer-songwriter also has a fan in at least one massive country name: Merle Haggard.

"As far as I’m concerned, he’s the only one out there. The rest of them sound like a bunch of [crap] to me," Haggard says. "He comes out and does a great show."

Vinyl is scheduled to premiere on HBO on Feb. 14. The show's first soundtrack, Vinyl: Music From the HBO Original Series -- Volume 1, is set for release on Feb. 12 and will feature, among others, Simpson's "Sugar Daddy."
