Should I Hire My Unemployed Friend? – Daily Dilemma

Now, these don't have to be huge problems- it could just be something bothering you or a friend, or it could be some little thing you and another just can't agree on. Here is today's dilemma:

I think I can make this quick and easy, well quick. I own a small construction business. I do pretty well, and usually can always use extra hands on the job. I have a friend who is out of work and has been for a while. It is very clear to me that it is bothering him and starting to hurt his self esteem.

I'm thinking of offering him some hours, he doesn't have experience so it wouldn't be great work, mostly clean up but I think he just needs to get out of the house and do something. And he makes a few bucks, a win/win right?

Well I brought it up to a mutual friend of ours and he told me by NO means should I make this offer. He said he thinks he may be offended by it and look at it as charity or worse, working together in a boss/employee type of relationship could ruin our friendship permanently.

Now I don't know what to do , I really just wanted to help and like I said, I could always use the extra help on the job but no I'm doubting myself. What do you guys think?
