Sam Outlaw has released another new song, “Trouble,” from his upcoming album, Tenderheart.

“Trouble” is the second song from Tenderheart that Outlaw has let fans hear early; the artist tells Rolling Stone Country that it’s “the toughest song on the record.” The song features the singer’s signature “SoCal country” sound behind lyrics that are all about ridding life of someone or something potentially toxic.

You got me in trouble again / I try to be good, but I just can’t,” Outlaw sings. “I must’ve sold my soul when I became your friend / ‘Cause you got me in trouble again.”

“Trouble” has a hint of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to it — not too surprising, given that Petty is one of Outlaw’s biggest musical influences.

“I’m a massive fan of Petty,” Outlaw says. “He does rock that is tough but has a softness to it.”

“Trouble” follows the release of “Everyone’s Looking for Home,” which will also appear on Tenderheart. That song’s music video pulls at viewers’ heartstrings, as it shows Outlaw trying to balance life as a touring musician with being a new dad (he and his wife Andie welcomed their son Leo in May of 2016).

“I think one of the main through lines was the heart,” Outlaw says of the inspiration behind Tenderheart. “I do a lot of analyzing of where I’m at. On my worst days, I give into fear, and I become someone else. On my better days, I’m making decisions out of tenderness and love. There’s so much more risk to that, but it’s the only way I want to live.”

Tenderheart is set for release on April 14.
