All of us here at GNA are saddened to hear about the loss of a local trooper who honored his commitment to protect and serve, and in the process, sacrificed his own well being.   A former New York State Trooper who helped with search and recovery efforts following 9/11 passed away over the weekend.

According to the New York State Police News,  Sgt. Charles Salaway joined the New York State police in 1990 and retired this past October.  Salaway became ill after performing duties at the World Trade Center site in 2001. State police say his illness stemmed from his assignment there.

After 27 years with the State police, the sergeant retired when his illness worsened. He was last assigned to Troop G in Wilton, Saratoga County.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they are dealing with the loss of a beloved husband and father.  Salaway is survived by his wife, five children, mother, brother and sister.
