Robbery Suspect Immediately Caught After Robbing Rensselaer Store

Around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Rensselaer Police received a call about from someone saying that the Handy Andy’s Grocery store was being robbed.

A 17-year-old walked into store and allegedly tried to rob it.

The suspect, Christopher J. Berhaupt from Rensselaer, went into the store at 75 Washington Avenue. He allegedly used a bandana to cover his face, walked up to the clerk, showed that he had knife, and then demanded money. The clerk handed over $20 to the suspect. Berhaupt ran from the store, but didn’t get far. The clerk, along with a couple of people that witnessed the robbery, ran after the suspect.

When police got to the scene, they immediately arrested the suspect who was just outside the store. Berhaupt was remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail after his after his arraignment in Rensselaer City Court. According to the article in The Times Union, he was charged with three misdemeanor counts of Endangering The Welfare Of A Child, Petit Larceny, Criminal Possession Of A Weapon in the fourth degree and felony First Degree Robbery.
