If you get any Christmas gifts this year that have a rechargable battery or require batteries and you normally buy the rechargable alkalines don't throw them away after they've worn out completely or you will be breaking the law.

According to the Associated Press, effective today it is  illegal to throw out any kind of rechargable battery in the State of New York. A law was signed back in December of last year has now gone into effect. You must now recycle any worn out rechargables and the stores that sell them have to take them to be recycled. The dumping ban is to help keep toxic chemicals out of landfills.

If you are caught dumping batteries in the trash you will be fined $50 for the first offense and $100 for the second.
