If you need to get a passport for the first time or you let your old one expire like me, you better hurry and get it done because it will cost you more soon. I have been procrastinating for so long to renew my passport. To be honest, it expired in 2013! I know, it's very irresponsible of me. But now I know that if I don't get it done soon it will cost me even more.

On April 2nd, U.S. passport fees will go up $10. Now an adult passport will cost $145 and children 16 and under will cost $115. The passport cards will increase to $65 for adults and $50 for kids. These cards are good for border crossings and travel by sea to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. They aren't valid for international air travel.

The increase is due to a hike in the passport execution fee. The state department says that they are increasing that fee from $25 to $35 to better cover the cost of processing the passport applications.

You can avoid the $10 increase if you apply for your passport renewal by mail. Application fees will not increase. To apply for a passport, you can click here.
