With the announcement of the Devils leaving Albany, you can't help but remember all the teams before them that did the same.

Whether it be bigger teams developing their stars in Albany or even Arena Football, the Capital Region has seen many teams come and go. The Devils are now going to be the second AHL team to leave Albany, are they the team remembered more fondly? To me who is just a casual fan of hockey it is hard to say the River Rats aren't the more memorable team. I mean the Devils even did a night where they took the ice in River Rats attire.

We do still have the Tri-City Valley Cats but lets not forget that before Houston Astros set up triple A baseball in the Capital Region, the Yankees had a double A ball team here. Yankee greats like Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte all got their start with the Albany-Colonie Yankees.

We also in the last quarter century have lost a few Arena Football teams. Seeing a team play with a 50 yard field apparently doesn't draw major crowd in Albany seeing as we lost both the Albany Firebirds and the Albany Conquest as well. Either way their were times where the Times Union Center was jammed with fans of both teams.

Sadly there will now be a gap in inexpensive family entertainment in the Capital Region, at least for families who love sports. How fondly do you look back on sports teams to leave Albany?
