Let’s Celebrate As We Turn 37
It may not be a milestone birthday/anniversary, but it can be considered that, for being consistent for that long. That being said, with all the radio stations in our area (and some outside the area), since the station signed on, (December 5, 1973) WGNA-F.M. has always been the station to turn to for country music. There are no other commercial radio stations in the Albany N.Y. area that have been doing the same format, playing the same genre of music or even having the same dial position for that long. We’ve ALWAYS been on the radio at 107.7 f.m. and have always had WGNA as our call letters. “Country Sunshine” by Dottie West was the first song played on the air. Some people may say that we have changed, which is true, but only because country music has changed, not to mention, at that time, WGNA F.M. had a religious owner. We would be playing a few country religious tunes every hour, mixed in with popular country (and western) music. The country music back then was extremely traditional, so it sounded VERY different from today’s country. But it WAS country. There is one air personality who has been on WGNA-F.M. just about from the beginning – John Stanley. He would be the one who can tell you more about WGNA’s beginnings than I can. He has personally lived through and seen the changes (if I may quote a Kenny Roger’s song title) “through the years”. (You can call John, and talk to him just about every Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 476-1077)
Although we may be celebrating our success, it wouldn’t be possible without YOU. So with that, a great, big THANK YOU! We couldn’t have done it without you.
