Jana Kramer, ‘Love’ – ToC Critic’s Pick [Listen]

Love
Warner Music Nashville

Jana Kramer shows the world how to make an extremely personal moment universal in her new song ‘Love.’ The first single from her forthcoming album comes drenched in pain and honey. It burns like whiskey but also leads to something more celebratory.

The song finds Kramer on the heels of her breakup with Brantley Gilbert, but it’s not quite the song one may have expected. There’s hurt, but more importantly there’s hope. In a world of black roses Kramer’s song stands out as a single crimson flower to lean on during times of great sadness.

“Love, how many times can a heart break / Love, how much weight can a soul take / Love, I don’t know where you ran off to / But love, love, love, I still believe in you,” Kramer sings with conviction at each chorus.

As great as a bitter break-up song can be, ‘Love’ is more powerful. It’s easy to imagine thousands of shattered hearts finding her new track, using it to pull them out of a dark place created by a split.

“I still believe in miracles / I still believe in wedding rings and bibles / I still believe the best walk you’ll ever take / Is walking down the aisle,” she adds during the second verse before ramping up for two final choruses.

Catt Gravitt helped Kramer write this song. It’s a fine lyric, perhaps underrated because of the singer’s personal vocal performance. One comes away feeling like he or she knows all about the Michigan native after listening to her share her scars, without loosing her smile.

Key Lyrics: “Love, how many times can a heart break / Love, how much weight can a soul take / Love, I don’t know where you ran off to  / But love, love, love, I still believe in you

Did You Know?: Catt Gravitt also co-wrote many of the songs on Kramer’s debut album, including the Top 5 hit ‘Why Ya Wanna.’
