All across New York state volunteer fire departments will be open this weekend in efforts to recruit new members.  Much of the state relies on volunteers to staff their fire houses. Do you have what it takes?

A few months ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Boght Fire Department in Latham for an open house. The volunteers did demonstrations and made fire safety fun and not scary for the kids. They also gave us family safety tips and important information. These men and women are special people who volunteer for the love of their communities.

According to reports, if the fire houses were staffed with paid members, it would cost the state $3.9 billion per year and most property taxes would go up 25%. There are over 450 volunteer firehouses across the state and most of them are participating in this weekends recruiting. To find out what fire houses are looking for volunteers in the Capital Region, click here.
