He served as governor of New York State from 1975 - 1982, being the first democratic governor in 16 years. Before that served for seven terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 12th district.

We learned from WTEN that Ex-Governor Hugh Carey assisted to help New York City, when the city’s finances were a mess in the mid 1970s. According to a story from A.P., the governor had inherited the worst economic climate since the Great Depression.

Some other things he did was help get state funding for construction of the Carrier Dome, in Syracuse. When conservative legislators wanted to reinstate the death penalty, he helped prevent that from happening. Hard to believe that a governor would actually cut taxes, but he did. Hugh Carey died earlier today at his summer home on Shelter Island.

We pass our condolences to his family
